Ciscomani Leads Legislation to Name Town of Marana Post Office After Community Icon Ed Honea
Bill introduction comes on one-year anniversary of Honea’s passing
WASHINGTON – Congressman Juan Ciscomani today introduced bipartisan legislation to name the main post office in Marana, Arizona after former town Mayor Ed Honea.
The bill, designating the Mayor Ed Honea Memorial Post Office at 13355 North Lon Adams Road, is co-sponsored by the entire Arizona House congressional delegation and will honor the life and legacy of a Marana native who dedicated his life to serving his community.
“Ed was the local boy who made good,” said Congressman Ciscomani, whose 6th Congressional District includes the town. “He loved Marana with all his heart, and Marana certainly loved him in return.”
Honea’s service to his hometown spanned 37 years - three terms on the Town Council and five as mayor. His family has deep roots in Marana, once a quiet, predominantly agricultural community that has become one of the fastest growing towns in southern Arizona. Honea’s father also served on the Town Council.
“Ed was one of Southern Arizona’s most influential leaders, a pillar of the Marana community, and someone I called a friend,” Ciscomani said. “An era ended with his unexpected passing in November of 2024, but with the Mayor Ed Honea Memorial Post Office, future generations will always be reminded of the man who helped build Marana. I’m honored to have spoken with Mayor Honea’s family about introducing this bill to honor their loved one. I am grateful to my Arizona colleagues for joining me in cosponsoring this legislation and I look forward to seeing it advance in Congress.”
The bill, H.R. 6247, now heads to the House Oversight Committee. Click HERE to read the full bill text. Ciscomani noted that its wide support among the Arizona congressional delegation is a testament to Honea’s reputation.
The legislation is co-sponsored by David Schweikert (AZ-01), Eli Crane (AZ-02), Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03), Greg Stanton (AZ-04), Andy Biggs (AZ-05), Adelita Grijalva (AZ-07), Abraham Hamadeh (AZ-08), and Paul Gosar (AZ-09).
"Mayor Ed Honea devoted his life to our nation, his faith, and to the great people of Marana. From his years in the U.S. Navy to his nearly four decades of public service, he worked tirelessly on behalf of the community he loved,” Congressman Eli Crane said. “I’m grateful to cosponsor this bill, which honors his meaningful life of leadership, vision, and service."
“Ed Honea served his community, his country, and worked tirelessly for his hometown. He served the town of Marana for 37 years in the Town Council and as Mayor,” Congressman Andy Biggs said. “I'm grateful to Mr. Ciscomani for leading the effort to honor Ed's legacy.”
“With nearly 40 years of public service under his belt, Mayor Ed Honea dedicated his career to serving the Marana community with passion and pride,” Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari said. “I am honored to memorialize his lifetime of leadership with this bill.”
"I came to know Ed Honea when we both served as mayors, and I saw firsthand his love for Marana and its people. Ed's leadership over nearly four decades was transformative—his vision on transportation issues and economic development helped shape the growth we see across Pima County today,” said Congressman Stanton. “I'm proud to partner with Congressman Ciscomani to honor this remarkable Southern Arizonan whose legacy will continue to benefit our region for generations to come."
Honea passed away unexpectedly on November 24, 2024 at age 77. He was a 1965 graduate of Marana High School and served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees. He worked as a contractor for the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years. The post office that will bear Honea’s name is the post office where he worked as a mail carrier.
Naming the post office after Honea was enthusiastically welcomed by Marana Mayor Jon Post and Town Manager Terry Rozema.
“Mayor Honea wasn’t just a colleague, he was my friend, and I miss him every day,” said Mayor Post. “He once delivered mail for the United States Postal Service, serving this community one letter at a time, and I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor his legacy than to place his name on the building.
“Mayor Honea cared deeply about the people of Marana,” said Rozema. “Every decision he made came from a place of genuine love for this community and a belief that public service should improve the lives of our residents. His legacy will continue to inspire those of us who serve. It is fitting that his name will now be honored on the post office as a lasting reminder of his commitment to Marana.
